THE CHAPTER HOUSE

The chapter house or assembly room was next in importance to the church. Here the brothers gathered every morning to pray for God’s blessing on the work of the day. Then a chapter was read from the Rule Book of the Order of Grandmont. Following the reading, the superior of the community, normally the prior or, a senior monk, read a list of the names of the brothers who were to take charge of various tasks. The prior then listened to any brothers who had committed faults against the rule and finally suitable punishments were administered.
At first the word ‘chapter’ referred to a chapter from the Rule, then the assembly room became known as the ‘chapter house’.
