THE AUMBRY

On the opposite side of the sanctuary there is a large cupboard in the north wall of the Church. The
monks used the latin, armarium for this special cupboard. In simple parish churches it was and still is referred to as an aumbry. It seems strange that for much of the medieval period a sacristy in which vestments and vessels could be stored and set out for use, was not regarded as a necessity until the early fourteenth century. Otherwise the vestments and vessels were kept in the sanctuaries and this is where the priest vested. Such cupboards had locked doors as their contents could be very valuable. Inside the aumbry you can see a niche side wall, this was where the holy oils were kept.
